Sower’s Kaylee Burton takes a look at the clubs and bars around Norman and Bricktown.
Norman CityWalk
Location: 70 N. Oklahoma, Bricktown
Cover charge: One cover charge gets you in to all of the complex clubs.
Why it’s hot: Eight clubs under one roof is a great way to avoid the dreaded “public intoxication” charge. Plus it’s a perfect way for indecisive groups to finally make a decision.
Pitfalls: Most of the club themes are questionable at best.
Breakdown:
1. Posh is the newest addition to the City Walk complex. It’s very dark and decorated with plush, modern furnishings along with state of the art sound and light systems. With its techno and house groove, Posh is the closest thing to a Las Vegas club feel that you’ll find in the metro, so much so that wearing jeans to this party is frowned upon.
2. City Limits is your basic modern nightclub, complete with a laser/light, fog and confetti show on Fridays and Saturdays at midnight. But beware the random country music amidst Top-40 hits.
3. Tequila Park is great if you have a love affair with boozed up worms. But if not, it’s well…not.
4. Dirty Martini is a cigar lounge and bar with a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of comfy seating. It’s a great place to rest when bouncing between the other clubs.
5. Boogie Nights is a throwback to the days when polyester leisure suits were king and leg warmers were queen. The 1970s and 1980s themed discotheque is a great bet if you’re feeling goofy and reminiscent, but for the most part, these kinds of parties are best left to the themed date parties of Greek Row.
6. Gong Crazy Karaoke is a well lit room full of tables where people from all over the city can come to watch you make a total fool of yourself. Just remember that the club goers in this room will actually be able to see what you look like, so please, do this before you get all sweaty.
7. Stooges Piano Bar is probably not where you want to be unless you’re taking your parents out for a night on the town.
8. CityRock is one of City Walk’s latest additions and an up-and-coming live music venue for local bands.
O’Connells Irish Pub & Grille
Location: 120 E. Lindsey, Norman, and Campus Corner
Cover charge: None.
Why it’s hot: Another mainstay in Norman, O’Connells is famous for throwing the best St. Patrick’s Day party in town, complete with green beer and green food. Year round they also offer great deals on food, like 40 cent wing Mondays, along with a friendly staff and fun casual atmosphere.
Pitfalls: It’s not a club, it’s a bar, so don’t expect to get your groove on unless you’re just really that drunk.
Skky Bar Ultra Lounge
Location: 7 Mickey Mantle Drive, across from the ballpark, Bricktown
Cover charge: N/A
Why it’s hot: Ladies get in free on Thursdays and everyone drinks free domestic longnecks until midnight.
Pitfalls: While it’s called a club, the busiest place is the bathroom because the overpriced drinks are watered down and nobody cares about missing the next song. Chances are that it won’t be worth dancing to anyway as even the DJ has problems staying awake.
Rok Bar
Location: 119 E. California, on the Canal, Bricktown
Cover charge: N/A
Why it’s hot: Rok Bar has some of the best drink specials in town and there’s always a fresh DJ spinning the turn tables. Ladies get in free all night on Spoiled Rotten Thursdays and guys pay $5 for $3 shots of southern comfort all night. Sinful Sundays are a college kid’s dream with no cover charge for guys or girls, and the bar boasts $1.50 longnecks, free drafts until 11pm, and $4 Jack and Coke all night.
Pitfalls: The lines are long and the venue is crowded.
Tapwerks Ale House & Café
Location: 121 E. Sheridan Avenue, Bricktown
Cover charge: Only on weekends which feature live music, and never more than $5.
Why it’s hot: Tapwerks is the ultimate beer bar, featuring the largest beer selection in the state with 106 beers on tap and over 100 bottled options. There’s no dress code and the venue is loaded with pool tables, darts, a juke box and a live music area that doubles as a dance floor. If you’re hungry you don’t have to settle for regular bar food; everything is made fresh, even the french fries which are beer battered to order.
Pitfalls: The first floor is all-ages which is great if you’re bringing underage friends, but kind of annoying if you want to avoid the kids who couldn’t get in anywhere else.
The Mont
Location: 1300 Classen Boulevard, Norman
Cover charge: None.
Why it’s hot: Its historical presence in Norman makes it a mainstay for bar hoppers and anyone seeking a good meal under $10. They’re famous for their relaxed patio atmosphere and extensive shot and mixed drink menus.
Pitfalls: The bathrooms are extremely cramped and the stalls are often missing doors. Plus, the bar area is extremely small and cramped.
