Norman Women
While it’s expected that most females add accessories to glam up their outfit, girls on campus take the initiative and are highly innovative with their football attire. Kim’s Alterations on Main Street and Hal Muldrow Drive has created a lot of buzz on campus for turning OU t-shirts into one of a kind dresses that many ladies sport during the sweltering heat of September and the frigid cold of December games.
Kim Lu, owner of Kim’s Alterations says customers bring in 1XL t-shirts and then she transforms them by cutting off the sleeves, adding elastic and adorning them with ruffles at the bottom.
The dresses start out at $25 to make and take about a week to complete, she says.
“We get the business, they get the dress and everyone is happy in the end,” Lu says.
Jerry Hatter, owner of OU merchandise store Balfour, at Boyd Avenue and Asp Avenue says many girls come into his store to buy the t-shirts to make into dresses. But the pursuit of dresses is not the only thing that ladies come in for, he says.
Burnout shirts—meaning some areas of the fabric are treated to look thinner—are very popular with lady Sooners. The burnout t-shirts have Ed Hardy-esque graphics, decorating the shirts across the front and the sides.
As far as accessories go, totes and carry-all purses are very popular with the young college crowd for football season, Hatter says. Costume jewelry, such as beaded necklaces with OU medallions and pink caps are additional favorites of campus. Also, the demand for women’s sunglasses has grown and stores have a bigger variety of them in stock than ever before.
Although the season hasn’t started yet, Hatter says he’s making a prediction hat scarves will be very in this year once the weather gets chilly.
“Scarves are going to be really popular this year. We have quite a few coming and there are a lot more available from a lot of different manufacturers,” Hatter says.
Men
Guys, although famously accused of being indifferent to their wardrobe choices can surprisingly be choosy when it comes to their Sooner gear.
Blake Hodges, criminology junior, said the most important thing for a guy to wear to a football game is something comfortable.
“Wear white OU apparel so you don’t sweat to death,” he says.
Hatter adds that football jerseys are still very popular for young college men to wear to the games. And although guys on campus prefer to just wear t-shirts and shorts, they can be quite particular with the labels inside them.
“A lot of the kids seem to like the Nike t-shirts,” Hatter says. “We sell a lot of the classic Nike shirts with the Oklahoma arch. It’s always been popular and it always will be popular.”
As for other apparel items, guys always turn to hats to keep the sun out of their eyes and the trend factor doesn’t hurt.
Most guys usually go for a traditional style cap, but flat bills are becoming more popular, Hatter says. Variety for men comes in with the styles of the hats, coming in different colors and patterns, like plaid and camouflage.
There are many places to buy your Sooner gear around Norman, such as Apothem, Campus Spirit, Wal-Mart, TJ Maxx, and The University Book Store. So happy hunting and remember, life is a catwalk, even at OU football games.
