The Sooner volleyball team added another signature win for the season with a three-set sweep over No. 20 Baylor on the road Wednesday [25-22, 25-20, 25-22].
“You always want to have those ranked opponent wins on your NCAA Tournament resume,” OU coach Santiago Restrepo said. “We’ve discussed building that resume with this team. That’s what our mission is down this final stretch.”
The Bears stunned the Sooners early in Waco with several quick attacks, strong blocks and a service ace to take a commanding 9-3 lead in the opening set. OU was patient and waited for better attack opportunities, later stealing the lead at 16-15. The Sooner defense froze the Bears’ potent offense to jump up 21-16.
OU had a chance to lock up the set at 24-19, but the Sooners squandered three set-point chances before closing the first set 25-22.
OU forced eight Baylor errors in the set and held the Bears to a .160 attack percentage. Redshirt junior Francie Ekwerekwu had 6 kills in the first, and the Sooners tallied four blocks.
Both offenses were in a rhythm to start the second set. Neither team committed errors early on and both had attack percentages above .400 in the first half of the set.
OU was able to increase a 12-11 lead to 16-11 when Baylor started misfiring offensively. The Sooners played consistently on both sides of the net to build a 22-15 lead.
The Bears rediscovered their tempo and tried to fight back, but OU’s lead was large enough to absorb the late surge. The Sooners had a match-high .395 attack percentage in the set to win 25-20.
OU came out hot after the break to take an 8-2 lead in the third set. However, the Sooners were unable to hold off the Bears for long, allowing Baylor to rally back to a 13-all tie. The Bears grabbed a momentary 16-15 lead, but the Sooners regained control at 18-17 and held on for the sweep with a 25-22 win.
The Sooners finished with a .311 team attack percentage and edged Baylor defensively 55 digs to 47. OU held all but one Baylor player from gaining double-digit kills in the set.
Ekwerekwu had a match-high 18 kills for OU and only misfired on six hits for a .654 attack percentage. Sophomore Suzy Boulavsky added 13 kills, nine digs and two block assists. Sophomore Caitlin Higgins had 10 kills, one solo block and a block assist.
Senior Bridget Laplante led the Sooners on defense with a match-high 15 digs and added a block assist. Freshman libero María Fernanda had 11 digs and four assists.
Brianne Barker, sophomore setter, had 44 assists and 10 digs for her 18th double-double of the season.
