Sooner freshmen standout in exhibition

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

While the 93-53 routing of the British Columbia Thunderbirds was no different than anyone expected, the domination by a host of freshmen players may have caught some by surprise.

The Sooner’s had four freshmen put up double digit points in the game at Lloyd Noble Center last night. Guard Tommy Mason-Griffin and forward Keith “Tiny” Gallon put up 12 and 10 points, respectively. Guard Steven Pledger and forward Andrew Fitzgerald had 14 and 10 points, respectively.

While Mason-Griffin and Gallon have become known as the usual suspects as far as new talent goes, the shadow they cast has seems to cover up players like Pledger and Fitzgerald who were both highly recruited out of high school. Fitzgerald was a top 100 recruit in the 2009 class according to most recruiting Web sites, including rivals.com and scout.com.

Sophomore guard Willie Warren, who had 23 points despite not hitting a three-pointer, spoke highly of the new group and their talent after the game, emphasizing the relationship he has had with Mason-Griffin and Gallon since they were all in middle school.
